Map
A map is displayed using Apple Maps when you click on the Map
button on the
summary page. Alternatively, on the iPhone, iPad or macOS, you can select one
or more track segments on the tracks page, long-press on one of the tracks and
choose the View on Map
option. The map is displayed with the selected track
segments depicted as a single red track.
The map tiles are only available online, but might be available from the cache when offline.
By selecting the arrow icon the map cycles through showing your current position (if available), your current heading (on devices with a compass) and disabled.
Once the map has been rotated a compass icon is displayed indicating north. Clicking on the icon re-orientates the map to north.
There are also controls at the bottom of the screen to select map layers,
Standard
, Hybrid
or Satellite
. The first two layers also provide the
option to view traffic information.
If a route has been selected (see Routes, it is displayed on the map in blue with icons depicting the start and finish points. If there are any waypoints in the corresponding GPX file, they are also shown on the map.
Waypoints
By default, the waypoint is shown with a blue map pin together with the waypoint name, if provided.
If the GPX file contains a symbol name for the waypoint, the below rules are used to determine an icon, by case-significantly matching the symbol name with the name shown in double inverted commas:

Current Track Log
The behaviour of the map changes a little between the watch and other devices.
When logging locally on the watch is active (i.e. Run on watch
is enabled),
the watch separately maintains a track for the map, independently of the local
GPX file it builds. As each new location is saved it is appended to the map's
track. If logging is stopped and restarted it continues appending to the same
map track. To clear the track, select the Reset map track
option from the
summary page. Once the track is cleared, it is only viewable on the paired
iPhone.
On other devices, when local logging is active (i.e. you are logging to local GPX file), the map displays the current local track in red and is updated each time a new location is saved. When you stop logging the current track is terminated and is no longer shown next time you display the map page. Thereafter to view the track, select it from the Track List page.
